What Happens at a Football Combine
A football combine is a one-day evaluation where athletes get measured, tested, and watched by coaches. You show up, run the same drills as everyone else, and leave with verified numbers college programs can trust. Here is exactly how the day works.
What Happens at a Combine
Every combine follows the same basic flow. Athletes get measured, get tested, then get evaluated at their position.
Physical measurements
Staff record baseline numbers first: height and weight, and at some events vertical reach or wingspan.
Athletic testing
Athletes run standardized drills that measure speed, power, strength, and agility. Same drills, same setup, same scoring for everyone, which is what makes the results comparable.
Position drills
Many combines also include individual skill evaluations or one-on-one sessions led by regional scouts and coaches. This is where athletes show what the stopwatch can't: technique, footwork, and how they compete.
Standard Combine Testing Drills
A typical high school football combine runs four core tests.
40-Yard Dash: Raw straight-line speed and acceleration
Pro-Agility (5-10-5) Shuttle: Lateral quickness and change of direction
Vertical Jump: Lower-body explosion and jumping power
Bench Press: Upper-body strength and endurance (rep-out)
Why Combine Results Matter
Verified data for college coaches. Coaches get objective, consistently measured stats, which takes self-reported numbers and guesswork out of the recruiting process.
Real recruiting exposure. Verified numbers help athletes figure out which college level fits where they are right now, whether that's D1, D2, D3, or NAIA.
A development baseline. Underclassmen can see how they stack up against regional peers and where to focus training before it counts.
